No field of study is more important to human beings than the social sciences. To understand society is to learn not only the conditions that limit our lives but also the opportunities open to us for improving the human condition. Increasing our knowledge of human society is as important as learning more about mathematics, physics, chemistry, or engineering, for unless we can develop societies in which human beings can live happy, meaningful, and satisfying lives, we cannot reap the benefits from learning how to make better

IN KUTTANAD

OBJECTIVE: To understand the agricultural and irrigation practices in Kuttanad.

INTRODUCTION

The teacher enters the classroom and greets the students. To check their previous knowledge teacher asks some questions on previous classes. How many divisions are there in the topography of Kerala? Which are they? What is the main means of livelihood of the people in midland? What do the people in coastal area depend on? After the comments of students teacher says that the live of people everywhere is dependent on the environment and geographical conditions around them. Today we are going to learn about a unique geographical land in Kerala which has some specific geographical features totally different from that of other regions in the state. Kuttanad in the district of Alappuzha is the place that we are going to study about. Let’s examine how the geography of Kuttanad influenced the people

PRESENTATION
Teacher shows a video of Kuttanad in front of the students with the help of a laptop. Asks the pupil about the content of the video.  Teacher asks them to describe the visuals shown in the video. Teacher tells the students that Kuttanad is the place that spreads over Vembanad lake, the largest backwater in Kerala. He shows a map of Aplappuzha and asks the pupil to locate Kuttanad in it.

Teacher explains that Kuttanad is the only place in Kerala that lies below sea level. He mentions the names of the rivers flowing through Kuttanad and tells why the land faces floods during monsoon and problems of saline water during summer.

These rivers flow through Kuttanad and join the Vembanad lake, the biggest backwater in Kerala

Influence of the rivers

During monsoon, the rivers bring large amount of water to the Vembanad lake, causing floods in Kuttanad region

During summer, the flow of fresh water decreases and saline water enters the low lying regions from the sea. The salinity causes scarcity of drinking water and damages agriculture. This problem is referred to as ‘Oruvellam’.

These phenomena makes agriculture in Kuttanad really difficult

Teacher asks the students to find out the names of two paddy crops given in the source book. He shows them a video of a man operating a water wheel. . Teacher asks questions about the activity of the man in the video and what it is meant for. He then, makes a description about the traditional methods used for agriculture in Kuttanad with the help of a power point presentation.
